Innovators, clinicians and researchers took part in a workshop yesterday (27 Feb) to explore how good ideas can become a reality.

The Children and Young People’s Medtech Cooperative and the Yorkshire & Humber Academic Health Science Network hosted the How to Develop Good Ideas in Paediatric Health and Medicine event in Sheffield. Delegates heard from a wide range of speakers before taking part in round table discussions.

The main topic was the support available in the development and commercialisation elements of the innovation journey with talks on:

• Research design and setting up clinical trials
• Access to funding opportunities
• Regulatory guidelines
• Building a value proposition
• Financial modelling

Delegates also heard case studies outlining the experiences of innovators and companies who have already developed products for use by clinicians and patients.

These speakers included Stephen Tooke, Commercial Director of Tookie Ltd., Dr Kevin Auton of Aseptika Ltd., Dr Katherine Jeays-Ward from the Devices4Dignity MedTech Co-operative and Professor Heather Elphick from Sheffield Children’s Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

Other speakers were Dr Clare Bartlett from the Children and Young People’s Medtech Cooperative, Sophie Bates and Peter Roberts from Yorkshire & Humber AHSN, Jane Fearnside from NIHR Research Design Service, Professor Medhi Tavakoli and Richard Hebdon from the Knowledge Transfer Network and Julie Collins from Apsiz Services.
