The Yorkshire & Humber Academic Health Science Network (AHSN) would like to congratulate the Barnsley Community Musculoskeletal ESCAPE-pain team for winning the Excellence in Improving Health Award at South West Yorkshire Partnership Trust’s Excellence Awards.

ESCAPE-pain is a six-week group rehabilitation programme for people with osteoarthritis. Approximately 1 in 5 adults over 45 years in England have osteoarthritis of the knee and 1 in 9 adults have osteoarthritis of the hip.

The multi-award winning programme has two elements: an education component and an exercise programme tailored to the person’s individual needs.

The Yorkshire & Humber AHSN is supporting the roll-out of this programme within our region. There are currently five sites delivering ESCAPE-pain: two NHS sites in Barnsley Clinical Commissioning Group and three Sports England funded sites in Harrogate, Sheffield and Rotherham.

Oliver Barnes, Programme Lead for the Yorkshire & Humber AHSN comments: “We’re delighted to hear that the team has been recognised in this way. The award is the latest endorsement of the quality, flexibility and immense value of the Escape-pain programme.

“The Yorkshire & Humber AHSN will continue to support services, organisations and healthcare, leisure and community areas to plan and implement ESCAPE-pain specific to their local context.”

Martha Cooke, a Senior Physiotherapist at South West Yorkshire Partnership Trust adds: “The ESCAPE-pain programme is an education and exercise class for patients with hip and knee osteoarthritis. It enables people to manage their condition, and teaches them they can keep their symptoms steady for a long period of time. It’s really motivating for them and for us to see the improvements achieved.”
