How digital technology can support the day to day work of community nurses will be the focus of a Yorkshire & Humber AHSN event in Leeds on Tuesday 19 March.

The Technology for Community Nursing event has been organised by the AHSN and NHS England’s Nursing Directorate. Speakers include Dr Crystal Oldman CBE, Chief Executive of The Queen’s Nursing Institute and Emma Self, Community Nursing Lead, NHS England. Heather Caudle, NHS England’s Director of Nursing – Improvement, will take part in the discussion panel.

Delegates from NHS and commercial organisations are welcome to attend.

A recent 2018 report by the Queen’s Nursing Institute (Nursing in the Digital Age) suggests that 29% of community nurses are still working largely with paper-based systems, having significant impact on their productivity and ability to deliver consistent high-quality patient care.

The Technology for Community Nursing event will explore the challenges faced by community nurses from a range of different perspectives and hear about technology that has the potential to significantly improve productivity, employee satisfactions and patient care. It will also include talks from areas that have successfully implemented technology to support their community teams and observed a positive impact on their workforce and the patients under their care.

The event, at Cloth Hall Court, will include a range of presentations, a panel discussion and a workshop session allowing clinical attendees to have discussions with technology providers.

Throughout the day there will be opportunities for clinical and commercial representatives to work with the Yorkshire & Humber AHSN to support the adoption and spread of technology.

Dr Sean Clarkson, Programme Manager at Yorkshire & Humber AHSN, said: “We’re really excited about this event and the opportunities we have to work with our NHS partners and commercial organisations to address the challenges faced by community nurses.

We have worked with a wide range of nurses and front-line staff to help design the structure and content of the day to ensure that it meets the needs of our delegates.”

The Technology for Nursing event is open to clinical representatives and commercial representatives who can offer relevant technology solutions especially around:

• Wound monitoring via smartphones
• Risk stratifications
• Agile working technology – hardware and software
• Management of long term conditions
• Remote consultation
• Allocation, capacity and demand planning
• Integrated community/secondary care IT systems – communication with hospital providers and accessing medical records
• Automated systems to detect and alert about deteriorating patients and provide general remote monitoring
