In a nutshell
The AHSN and our Improvement Academy are supporting health and care organisations to build capacity and capability among all staff groups, including frontline clinical staff, managers, IT, HR, administrative staff and executive directors. We have a range of training and resources available that will help health and care organisations.
The Quality Improvement (QI) training programmes help to develop capability for improvement. In 2014/15 a Quality Improvement Training Advisory Group (QITAG) was established from member organisations to steer the development of a regional Framework for QI training. The development and roll out of the QI Training for Yorkshire and Humber has been advocated and supported by the regional QITAG. More information about the QITAG can be found here.
Following consultations across Yorkshire and Humber and development of a regional QITAG, a wide variation and gaps in the provision of foundation Quality Improvement training across our NHS organisations in Yorkshire and Humber has been highlighted.
What we are doing about it
In 2015/16 we will provide access for all healthcare staff in Yorkshire and Humber to online ‘entry-level’ QI training, as well as delivering face-to-face core skills workshops, and highly specialist training, including a ‘Train the Trainer’ programme. The Improvement Fellows scheme supports those who are already leaders of improvement in their own organisations.

Quality Improvement Training
On-line Bronze level Quality Improvement training is FREE and available for ALL healthcare providers, commissioners across Yorkshire and Humber and others interested in supporting or delivering improvement. Aimed at all staff groups, this foundation training introduces the ‘Model for Improvement’ and some practical improvement tools followed by a short quiz at the end of each module. It takes approximately two hours to complete and on completing all the modules a certificate of completion can be printed off. For full details of the bronze training, click here.
Silver level training includes a range of in-depth sessions around the practical application of quality improvement methods – from examples of methods, tools and techniques that engage multidisciplinary teams in quality improvement initiatives, to behaviour change. Silver training is divided into two separate 1-day training sessions :
- Silver level for individuals
- Silver level for teams

At Gold level we will offer a range of training that will support healthcare organisations to maintain and enhance a sustainable improvement culture within their services. Our ‘Train the Trainer’ programme and associated network is currently supporting 16 gold-level trainers from 10 organisations to deliver face-to-face ‘silver for teams’ QI training and project support within their own organisations. These trainees were selected by their QITAG organisational representative. Future Gold Training will include “Quality Improvement for Boards”. For further information please contact Maureen Mcgeorge
