Paul Tobin, a General Porter at St James’ Hospital in Leeds, has won the national Operational Services Support Worker of the year award at the Our Health Heroes event.

Paul won the award for creating the first Portering Safety Huddle at the hospital. The huddle ensures all porters are working as safely as possible.

The Huddle Up for Safer Healthcare (HUSH) programme is led by our Improvement Academy which supports frontline teams in hospitals to maintain patient safety and reduce harm.

The huddles involve multi-professional teams who get together to discuss any concerns they may have about patients, especially those who are most at risk from falls and pressure ulcers.

Richard Stubbs, Chief Executive Officer at the Yorkshire & Humber AHSN said: ‘’I want to congratulate Paul on winning this award. Paul’s innovative work coming up with the first Portering Safety Huddle demonstrates that everyone can help improve patient care.”

The Health Heroes Awards recognise and celebrate the incredible dedication and extremely hard work of healthcare professionals across the UK, over five categories, including: the Integrated Team of the Year, Workforce Planning Team of the Year, Apprentice of the Year and Clinical and Operational Services Support Worker of the Year.
