Healthy.io’s Dip.io is a smartphone-based urinalysis device. Built around the existing urine dipstick, a test kit and smartphone application, Dip.io enables home urine testing with no quality compromise. Healthy.io is the first company to turn the smartphone into a regulatory-approved clinical device.
How we helped
We first became aware of Healthy.io when Dip.io was added to the NHS Innovation Accelerator in 2017. Impressed by the product’s functionality and the potential to transform care pathways for patient cohorts who require regular urinalysis, we worked with Healthy.io to support them in expanding their evidence base for cost savings.
Having implemented Dip.io in the region to detect albuminuria in people with diabetes we commissioned York Health Economic Consortium (YHEC) to evaluate the innovation’s cost-effectiveness compared to standard care in the NHS. Diabetes is one of the most common causes of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). Detecting albumin in urine early helps prevent CKD complications and slows disease progression. The evaluation showed improved compliance with the ACR test and an 11% increase in the number of CKD diagnoses, which will significantly improve patient outcomes and deliver significant savings.
The health economic evaluation has shown that Dip.io has the potential to improve health, save lives, empower patients, reduce the burden on primary care and offer value for money to the NHS. We are supporting Healthy.io in raising awareness of the innovation across the region and the UK.
Yorkshire & Humber AHSN has not only funded a robust independent cost-model to underpin our evidence, it has supported us in how we present this dataset to the clinical community. Collaboration in writing up our ACR pathway into a Business Case to ensure it has meaning and impact for stakeholders who are evaluating our offering has been critical in our partnership
