More than 100 delegates from across the North of England attended a meeting last week to discuss how to improve the quality of care for people living with frailty.

The event was hosted by the Yorkshire & Humber Academic Health Science Network (AHSN) and supported by NHS England.

It brought together key national and regional professionals who want to improve services for people with frailty, including commissioners, clinicians and representatives from primary, secondary and community care, including local authorities.

Delegates had the opportunity to listen to a range of presentations, participate in several question and answer sessions and share best practice through networking opportunities.

The objectives for the day were to:

• Identify the services available to support people who are defined as being frail
• Look at what improvements can be made within Frailty Programmes
• Promote existing best practice
• Explore how we can work together to improve care and services within the Sustainability and Transformation Partnership (STP) regions.

Presentations were from both a national and regional perspective and included:

• Frailty: the national perspective by Dr Dawn Moody – Associate National Director for older people, NHS England.
• What the Data Tells Us: Using existing data to identify and drive improvements by Dr Adrian Hopper, Geriatric Medicine Lead, Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT) and Shane Hayward-Giles, RightCare Delivery Manager, NHS RightCare.
• Improving Care and Support for people with Frailty by Rachel Reid, Implementation Facilitator, NICE.
• Safer Prescribing for Frailty and Supporting Self-Care by Megan Humphreys, Implementation Manager in Healthy Ageing, Bradford Institute of Health Research and Sujo Anathhanam, Clinical leadership Fellow, Improvement Academy.
• Frailty-Falls-Fragility by Dr Dai Roberts, Programme development Lead, Health Innovation Manchester.
• ESCAPE-Pain, by Andrew Cooper, Associate Director – Patient Safety Collaborative, Innovation Agency.
• Safe and Well: Prevention and Response by Steve Duffield, Group Manager, Humberside Fire and Rescue Service.

After lunch, delegates took part in table discussions between STP regions including: Greater Manchester, Merseyside and Cheshire, Humber Coast and Vale, Lancashire and South Cumbria, South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw and West Yorkshire and Harrogate.

The day concluded with key actions being captured through delegate feedback during the STP discussions.
