Download a new report from Sanofi and Health Innovation Yorkshire & Humber, following a joint working project on Familial Hypercholesterolaemia (FH).

As part of our work on enhancing the understanding of cardiovascular diseases prevention, we are dedicated to understanding the potential risk factors, with a current emphasis on FH. It is an inherited genetic condition passed down through families, which can lead to extremely high cholesterol levels.

FH affects 1 in 250 people in the UK, yet over 90 per cent of cases are still undiagnosed. Left untreated, it is estimated that 50 per cent of men and 30 per cent of women with FH will have developed chronic heart disease by the age of 50.

The joint working project with Sanofi facilitated better identification of patients within primary care who may be at risk of having FH or high cardiovascular (CV) risk.

The project was led by two specialist FH teams at Sheffield and Hull and involved working alongside trusts and primary care providers across, Sheffield, Hull and North East Lincolnshire to:

• Improve identification and data recording of patients with FH or high CV risk.
• Improve the identification of patients with suspected FH.
• Create a more convenient service model which will improve patient experience and understanding of the disease.
• Provide more specialist care within GP practices.
• Create more prompt assessment and earlier access to the most appropriate treatments.
